Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Facility Operations, the Assistant Director of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) Maintenance serves as the campus' engineer responsible for the overall health and maintenance of campus MEP systems and components. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director of MEP Systems is the plumbing shop, electrical shop and the Chief Engineer. The role of the Chief Engineer is to provide technical management and leadership for the Central Plant and Engineering Services trade shops. The Central Plant shop operates and maintains the campus heating hot water and chilled water systems, and refrigeration systems. The Engineering Services shop maintains the campus Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and components, including the Distributed Digital Controls (DDC) for those systems, and others as required.

The incumbent manages several campus maintenance services and supply contracts; serves as primary design reviewer for a variety of small MEP maintenance repair and replacement projects; develops and administers a campus-wide MEP component preventive maintenance program. In addition, the incumbent serves as a member of the long-range strategic planning group for the Facilities Operations department. To ensure quality construction for Cal Poly, the incumbent reviews major and minor capital project designs for conformity with campus engineering design standards, codes of construction, and best practices. This position has some contact with the public, involving department and outside staff, vendors, and contractors for the purpose of exchanging information pertaining to project assessment, procedures, materials, and timelines.

Department Summary

Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities, grounds, and infrastructure. FMD consists of four critical and interdependent support departments, including Customer & Business Services; Environmental Health & Safety; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; and Facilities Operations. Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in the design or construction of MEP systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of effective personnel management practices and supervisory skills including a demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Thorough knowledge of project management related maintenance, renovation, and new construction including skills in design, planning, scheduling, staffing, purchasing, budget, and quality control.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, communicate, and apply federal and state laws, CSU and university personnel policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer driven energy management systems and electrical/electronic controls.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Relate Field AND five (5) years of progressively responsible experience working in a large maintenance department with at least two (2) years in a management/supervisory role.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of (or ability to obtain by date of hire) a valid California Driver's License. This position may require the ability to obtain AHERA Supervisor certification for asbestos-related work and Cal/OSHA Lead training as well as the ability to wear respiratory protection. A Cal/OSHA-mandated medical evaluation is required prior to the use of a respirator.
