About the Department/Position:

Under the general direction of the Building Trades Manager, the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of skilled work in the maintenance, alteration, and repair of mechanical systems and building facilities maintenance; concrete and masonry, carpentry and drywall, tile work, VCT flooring and acoustical ceilings, carpet, electrical, plumbing and irrigation, painting, swimming pool systems and maintenance, roof cleaning and maintenance and other related duties as assigned.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

• Inspects, maintains, and repairs any and all various building trades work including but not limited to plumbing, heating, water, and sewer systems; carpentry & drywall; VCT flooring & tile work; does electrical maintenance and repair work; repairs laundry, shop, automotive equipment, and electric vehicle/cart maintenance; modular furniture break down & set up; clean & maintain roofs; swimming pool cleaning & maintenance; performs building preventive maintenance work & repairs; concrete repair and replacement; asphalt street repairs; does miscellaneous interior and exterior painting and repair; estimates the cost of labor and determines the priority for requisitioning materials and supplies; keeps tools and equipment in good condition; keeps records and prepares reports, which may include the status of projects. Performs all work in a safe and efficient manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Required Education: These abilities normally would be acquired through four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in a mechanical or facilities/building trade, or any equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities and systems mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship Certificate or documented training in a related trade, High School Diploma, or GED
• Increasingly responsible experience including journey-level skill in any of the following trades; mechanical system, carpentry, electrical, plumbing or heating, and air conditioning repair; facilities building maintenance or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities/building maintenance mechanic which demonstrates achievement of a journey-level skill.
• Valid driver license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Must have journey-level experience in one of the following trades and a thorough knowledge of methods materials, and equipment used in the operation and repair of carpentry, concrete & masonry, flooring & tile work, roof maintenance, electric vehicle & battery maintenance, plumbing, heating, electrical, water, and sewer systems; thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in the repair of mechanical equipment and in general facilities building maintenance and repair work and skill in the performance of such work; working knowledge of safety orders of the Industrial Accident Commission dealing with heating, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the job; ability to estimate time and materials needed; ability to keep simple records; ability to follow procedural oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

• Working in a public sector environment such as schools, city, county or state.
