Classification Salary Range: $5,787 - $7,396 per month.

The anticipated hiring salary for this position is $5,787 per month.

About the Department/Position:

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Building Trades, the Auto Equipment Mechanic performs skilled, journey-level work in the overhaul, repair, maintenance, service, and adjustment of campus small engine, automotive, electric vehicles, light/heavy lawn, and construction equipment, including related electrical, cooling, hydraulic and related system repairs. The incumbent is also responsible for keeping general repair records and all necessary state records and documents required, including the filing of related vehicle reports and documents related to the CSU system and other regulatory agencies. Provide instruction and lead direction as needed. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Repairs and maintains Campus electric carts, using a variety of hand and diagnostic tools.
  • Determines the type of repairs required by reading work orders, talking to cart operator, or test-driving cart.
  • Tests operational performance of motor, using a voltmeter, and ammeter.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts, such as brushes, armatures, and controllers. Rewires electrical systems, and repairs or replaces electrical accessories, such as horn and headlights, forward and reverse switch, and controller.
  • Tests and recharges or replaces batteries. Lubricates moving parts and adjusts/replaces brakes and belts.
  • Perform structural repairs to the body of the cart, seats, and fabric tops.
  • Repairs and replaces equipment as appropriate.
  • Oversee the bi-monthly maintenance of the electric cart fleet by designated Facilities Service personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience as an automotive and/or equipment mechanic which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard apprenticeship program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of automotive and/or equipment mechanics including electrical systems and brake and engine overhaul.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, tools, materials, equipment, and computerized systems used in the maintenance, adjustment, and repair of engines, equipment, and accessories.
  • Working knowledge of wiring and electrical theory and engineering principles.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to automotive and other power-driven equipment, including applicable smog regulations.
  • Must be able to make skilled repairs to applicable automotive, maintenance, and/or construction equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions; perform a variety of skilled repairs on equipment.
  • Work from blueprints, drawings, and sketches to fabricate parts; perform required welding.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment and determine the extent of repairs; estimate cost, time, and materials of mechanical work and repairs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of experience directly servicing, maintaining, repairing, fabricating, and painting electric vehicles/carts
  • Strong electrical/mechanical system troubleshooting and repair skills for electric vehicles. Proven experience in electric cart body repair and fabrication including TIG welding and Plasma cutting experience.
